TRANSMODAL CORPORATION : CORPORATE ENVIRONMENT POLICY

Companies today must understand and play their part in crafting a better environmental future for their business and their industry as a whole. This is the basis of corporate social responsibility. This concept is as important to our business as excellent customer service and well developed technological solutions. Integral to this endeavor is the inclusion of our employees, customers, suppliers and other partners.

As an international third party logistics provider, we do not own or operate the means of transport (ships, trucks or planes). However, we recognize the significance of environmental concerns along the supply chain and choose partners with green policies in place. This endeavor is also a reflection of the influence of our clientele, as our supplier selection is driven by the needs and requirements of our customer base. This awareness is necessary in order to create better solutions for our business and for our green initiatives.

Commitment
A company’s ecological footprint is important. As a full-service logistics firm concerned with the international transportation of goods, Transmodal’s footprint spans the globe. We therefore take seriously the matter of reducing our environmental impact. We actively select service providers such as airlines and steamship lines that maintain a green commitment. Their corporate green policies are reviewed by us and kept on file. This enables us to fulfill a commitment to encourage services that are more environmentally-friendly. Other green initiatives that we are doing are as follows:

  • Paperless Work Environment
    Since 2004, we have implemented changes that move us significantly towards the goal of a paperless work environment. In an effort to reduce the use of paper and courier services, we utilize EDI, scanned document images and ACH payments whenever possible. Our goal is to become a totally paperless operation within all our office environments.
  • Recycling
    Managing waste is a critical aspect of the logistics function. There are several ways in which waste can be generated, from the paper that makes customer service function to the packaging materials that keep goods secure. Transmodal is committed to improving its management of resources, and has implemented recycling initiatives for paper and plastic. We have even substituted ceramic mugs for paper coffee cups in our work spaces. These activities significantly reduce our volumes of waste.
  • Energy Management
    The practice of daylighting was incorporated into the operations of our 2 main warehouse facilities in China at Shenzhen and Shanghai. This practice encourages the use of natural light for internal lighting purposes. There is also an added benefit of reduced fuel consumption. In general, natural light is used all day and electric lights are only turned on at dusk.
  • Air Emissions Improvements
    The use of energy and the resulting air emissions present a significant environmental impact. We continually support efforts to reduce emissions and have implemented measures of our own, such the use of electric forklifts in our warehouses in China. This practice has been beneficial in a number of ways. Electric forklifts produce no emissions, are quieter to use, do not require fuel to be stored, and generally last longer. We also encourage our employees to use public transportation in their daily movements.

At Transmodal, we have begun to put our commitment into action. Other areas in which we have placed emphasis include the following:

  • Maintaining contracts with US railroad services and routing containers by rail when it is more cost-effective, as this is a greener alternative to truck movements;
  • Keeping customers aware of environmentally friendly products, services and practices;
  • Maintaining a program supporting continual improvement of environmental endeavors;
  • Ensuring compliance with environmental legislation and regulations, as well as incorporation where possible of relevant environmental guidelines and frameworks;
  • Monitoring our operations and finding creative, environmentally-friendly solutions to solve problems;
  • Working with our local community to make opportunities to impact significant issues such as health, safety and the environment; and
  • Working with our global partners to promote sustainable changes, improvements and efficiencies in the industry.

Big Endeavor; Local Action
Environment is more than a buzz word. Every company can make important efforts that take better care of the environment in which we live, work, play and thrive. Initiatives may be small, large, local or global. Transmodal is working to build systems that improve environmental quality one step at a time. We believe that proper environmental management is important to current and future business practices. We invite our customers, partners and other stakeholders to work with us in creating a more sustainable supply chain and general business environment.
